FLIR to Participate in Celebration of Mass Spectrometry Event at Purdue University

Wendy Klausing, Vertical Marketing Manager, FLIR Detection

FLIR is honored to be a participant in the 2017 Celebration of Mass Spectrometry at Purdue University taking place June 2-3, 2017. Purdue University has a rich history in the development of mass spectrometry and continues to lead in the advancement of the field. The two days will precede ASMS in Indianapolis, IN and will involve a mixture of presentations from prominent members of the mass spectrometry community, discussion of the future of the technology, laboratory tours, and demonstrations.

FLIR’s unique connection to Purdue’s top-ranked Analytical Chemistry Program is long-standing. In 2000, Dennis Barket, Jr., now the Vice President and General Manager of FLIR Detection, and Garth Patterson, a fellow Purdue University analytical chemistry graduate, began to discuss the exciting advancements in mass spectrometry that were taking place in the laboratory of R. Graham Cooks, Purdue’s Henry B. Hass Distinguished Professor of Analytical Chemistry. Barket and Patterson recognized the potential to commercialize this technology at a time when world affairs were driving a distinct need.

Traditionally, chemical samples had to be taken back to large laboratory-based mass spectrometer systems for analysis, sacrificing valuable time. Given the global demand for on-site, accurate and timely chemical analysis, Barket and Patterson executed on their vision to commercialize portable mass spectrometers for homeland security, defense, environmental protection and research. The first Griffin GC/MS products were launched at Pittcon in 2004.

FLIR will demo its latest advancements in portable Mass Spectrometry at Purdue’s Celebration of Mass Spectrometry event. Other participating companies include Prosolia, Inc, PurSpec, Inc., Thermo Scientific Instruments, and Waters Corporation.
